This easy Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort food. Made with ground beef, creamy potatoes, and veggies, all simmered in a delicious rich sauce. If you are a meat and potato lover, then this is a dish for you!

I call this recipe Shepherd’s pie even though the traditional Shepherd’s pie is made with ground lamb. Cottage Pie uses ground beef, but here in the states ground beef is often used instead of lamb because it is widely available.
Regardless of what you call it, a shepherd’s pie is basically a casserole of layered meat and vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes, and baked in the oven until golden brown.
Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients
Ground Beef: I use lean ground beef for this recipe. You can substitute ground lamb.
Vegetables: Frozen peas, carrots, and corn.
Tomato Paste: Adds dept to the recipe.
Flour: All-purpose flour will thicken the gravy.
Liquids: Beef broth and Worcestershire sauce are in any good shepherd’s pie.
Seasonings: Dried rosemary, thyme, parsley, salt, and pepper.
Mashed Potatoes: I used Russet, but you can also use Yukon or a combination of both.
Butter: You will need a few tablespoons of softened butter to add to the potatoes.
Half and Half: Will give the potatoes the perfect creamy texture.
How to Make Shepherd’s Pie:
- . Peel, chop and boil potatoes.
- . Drain potatoes.
- . Add butter, half & half, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- . Mash the potatoes until smooth. Set aside.

- . Sauté chopped onion and garlic in olive oil.

What is the difference between shepherd’s pie and cottage pie?
The difference between the two pies is the type of meat. Shepherd’s pie is made with ground lamb, and cottage pie is made with ground beef. Here in the states ground beef is typically used for shepherd’s pie, which is what I used in this recipe.
